Every year, thousands of Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer, which refers to cancers of the mouth, lips, tongue, gums, and throat. It’s a disease that doesn’t discriminate, and unfortunately, it’s one that often goes undetected until it has already reached a later, harder-to-treat stage. The good news is that early detection can make the biggest difference in treating and flat-out preventing oral cancer, and your dentist plays a crucial role in finding it!

Why Is Oral Cancer So Often Caught Late?

One of the most dangerous things about oral cancer is how quietly it can develop. In its initial stages, it may look like a harmless sore or feel like nothing at all, and many people dismiss early signs or simply don’t know what to look for.

But by the time symptoms become impossible to ignore, the disease is often at an advanced stage. What’s worse is that the five-year survival rate drops dramatically the longer oral cancer goes undiagnosed. Keep in mind that while oral cancer can affect anyone, certain factors will significantly increase your risk, including:

  • Tobacco use, including cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products are among the leading risk factors.
  • Heavy alcohol consumption, especially in combination with tobacco use, multiplies the risk considerably.
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is linked to a growing number of throat cancers, especially in younger adults.
  • Prolonged sun exposure is a big risk factor, specifically for lip cancer.
  • Oral cancer risk also increases with age, with most cases diagnosed in people over 40.

Oral Cancer Signs to Watch For

You should see your dentist promptly if you begin to notice any of these symptoms:

  • A sore in the mouth or on the lip that doesn’t heal
  • A red or white patch anywhere inside the mouth
  • A lump or rough spot on the lips, gums, or inside the mouth
  • Pain, tenderness, or numbness in the mouth or lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the tongue or jaw
  • A persistent sore throat or the feeling that something is caught in the throat
  • A lump or mass in the neck

None of these symptoms automatically means cancer, but all of them deserve professional attention!

Your Dentist’s Role in Early Detection

During a routine exam, your dentist doesn’t just check for cavities and gum disease. They also physically examine your lips, tongue, cheeks, the floor and roof of your mouth, the back of your throat, and the lymph nodes in your neck—all areas where oral cancers can develop. This kind of screening takes just a few minutes and can genuinely make a life-saving difference.

In fact, when caught early, the five-year survival rate for oral cancer is significantly higher, which is why it’s wise to keep up with those routine visits, even when your mouth feels perfectly fine. And this Oral Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to schedule your next checkup!
